Econet Clarifies How Smart4U Bundles Work and Explains Its Fair Usage Policy

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has provided further clarification on how its Smart4U bundles work following increased customer enquiries about bundle eligibility, varying offers, and changes in internet speeds.

According to the mobile network operator, Smart4U is a personalised bundle that combines voice, data, and SMS into a single package. Unlike standard bundles, Smart4U offers are generated based on each customer’s usage history over the previous three months. This means that no two customers are guaranteed to receive the same offer, and a customer’s available package may change over time depending on their usage patterns.

One of the key areas Econet addressed is its Fair Usage Policy (FUP). The company says the policy is designed to ensure that network resources are shared fairly among all subscribers, particularly as demand for mobile data continues to increase.

Under the Fair Usage Policy, Smart4U customers initially enjoy the highest internet speeds available in their area. As data usage increases and specific usage thresholds are reached, the service moves through three usage stages:

  • Primary Stage: Customers receive the highest available network speeds.
  • Secondary Stage: Internet speeds are reduced after the first Fair Usage threshold is reached.
  • Tertiary Stage: Speeds are reduced further if usage continues beyond the secondary threshold.

Econet notes that customers who require faster speeds after reaching these thresholds can purchase a Smart4U Top-Up bundle, which restores browsing speeds to the highest available level in their location, subject to prevailing network conditions.

The operator also highlighted several important conditions of the Smart4U offering:

  • Bundles are valid for 30 days or until the allocated data is exhausted.
  • A Smart4U bundle can only be purchased once per calendar month.
  • Customers who exhaust their allocation before expiry can purchase a Top-Up bundle.
  • Smart4U bundles are non-transferable and are intended for use only on the purchasing line.
  • Tethering and hotspot functionality are not supported under the Smart4U offer.
  • Actual internet speeds may also vary depending on factors such as network coverage, device capability, location, and network congestion.

Customers can check whether they qualify for a Smart4U bundle by dialling *143#, selecting their preferred currency, and navigating to the Data > Smart4U menu.
